Set up by the government, the forces help to buy scheme aims to reduce the low rate of home ownership among the armed forces. In January 2023, it became a lifelong policy, so those who work in the forces have an opportunity to buy a home. Our advisers can help assist you with securing a mortgage with this scheme.

How does the Forces Help to Buy Scheme work?

With the forces help to buy scheme, you can borrow up to 50% of your salary–up to a maximum of £25,000. It’s used as a deposit for a first home or to help you move to a new property. The loan can also be used for solicitors and estate agent fees.

The property you buy must be located in the UK and you must intend to live there. It can be a new build or an older property, so whichever type of home you’ve got your eye on, it’s possible with the forces help to buy scheme.

Am I eligible for the Forces Help to Buy Scheme?

The forces help to buy scheme is open to:

  • Armed forces personnel who have completed the required length of service (typically at least two years)
  • Personnel who also have at least six months left to serve at the time of application
  • Those who meet the medical criteria.

The scheme is also for applicants leaving the armed forces. It enables you to resettle into civilian life by providing financial support to buy a home. 

It’s not available to reservists or members of the Military Provost Guard Service.

How do I apply for the Forces Help to Buy Scheme?

To start your journey to home ownership, you have to apply on the Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) portal through the self service application. You can get valuable advice on the process by speaking to your Chain of Command and personnel agency.

The forces help to buy scheme is accepted by most UK mortgage lenders. However, as an armed forces personnel, you should always inform the lender know your position, as it needs to be factored into your affordability and how much you can borrow.

Once your application is approved, it typically takes around two weeks for the funds to be available.
